In 1919 J. L. Anderson of Cheraw founded a brick company along the Great Pee Dee River in upper South Carolina. Like many brick makers of the era, Mr. J.L.’s company produced brick in periodic or beehive kilns, primarily for the local area, although rail shipments were made using the now disbanded Bennettsville and Cheraw Railroad that ran through the middle of the property. By focusing on making a quality product at a fair price, the early days of Palmetto Brick set the tone for his company’s continued growth and reputation in the building materials industry.
